Tiny House Regulations and Zoning Requirements in Minnesota

In Minnesota, a lot of improvements in the regulations have been done to make tiny houses more widespread.

For instance, the 2020 Minnesota Residential Code legally defines a tiny house as a house raning from 100 to 400 square feet.
Municipalities are however given the leeway to establish zoning ordinances regulating the land use, location, types of foundation etc. and these vary from place to place.

In 2016, the Minnesota house of representatives and senate passed a law that allowed tiny houses on wheels in the backyard of a family member.
In the same year, the senate passed a legislation authorizing the use and zoning of tiny homes as a housing option for the elderly, disabled and those approaching the end of life.
